The licensed occupational therapist is responsible for occupational therapy process.  The incumbent is responsible for providing up-to-date, timely, and comprehensive occupational therapy plans of care to improve the quality of life of patients.  Performs accurate, timely and measurable billing practices on a daily basis.  Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure complete quality care of the patient and to enhance the health and overall quality of life through individualized therapy.  Utilizes knowledge of patient’s age background physical history and cultural diversity in the implementation of the patient care.


1.               Adheres to department and facility policies, procedures, and standards of practice and maintains strict confidentiality.


2.               Collects data from the patients about daily living, work activities, recreational and leisure activities, sensory/motor components, cognitive integration, and psychosocial skills.


3.               Assesses with skill and accuracy; interprets results within the scope of professional abilities.


4.               Documents patient problems, long and short term goals and treatment interventions based on individual needs.


5.               Develops interdisciplinary treatment plans (based on standards of practice established by AOTA) in conjunction with patient, family, and rehab team.  Consults and coordinates occupational therapy with other therapy disciplines.


6.               Provides interventions consistent with total rehabilitation program, community based therapeutic activities, leisure activities programs, and goal-directed educational activities as necessary under the care of the referring physician.


7.               Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients; uses praise and other reinforcements to encourage appropriate behavior.


8.               Provides supervision and direction to OT students, assistants, and aides as required.


9.         Other duties as assigned.


Education/Certification:  Maintains a current Nebraska Occupational Therapy license.  Also maintains a current CPR certification. COTA applicants must be licensed in the State of Nebraska as well.


Experience:  Ability to perform occupational therapy as described by the following definition:  Through the use of the occupational therapy process, provide treatment as outlined in goals for patient as set by Occupational Therapist.  Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply therapeutic principles and practices, skillfully and safely progresses patients through the levels of treatment within the maximum capabilities of the patient.  Failure could have adverse consequences on continuity of care and patient outcome.


Equipment/Technology:  May include, but not limited to, CPMs, SCDs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation equipment, therapeutic pool lifts, Hoyer lift, heat and cold pack units, traction machines, paraffin baths, TENS unit, crutches, walkers, canes, exercise equipment, wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, general office equipments, safety equipment (safety belt, grab bars), and protective equipment (gloves, masks, gowns, goggles).

Language/Communication:  Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with various types of patients from all age groups and varied backgrounds and physical abilities.


Mathematical Skills:  Basic math skills.


Mental Capabilities:  Requires calculating, analyzing, sorting, comparing, listening, and reading comprehension.


Interpersonal:  Must be able to interact with co-workers and patients in an effective manner.
